Awards Daily speaks with Emmy nominee Nicole Beharie about the relevance of her The morning show character and why her showdown scene with Holland Taylor was one of the most memorable (and haunting) of the Apple TV+ series.
While The morning show The Apple TV+ drama series depicts the fictional consequences of real events and sometimes even manages to predict the future.
During the National Association of Black Journalists convention on July 31, where three black female journalists interviewed former President Donald Trump, Nicole Beharie couldn’t help but think of Chris Hunter and the similarities to her character’s interview with Cybil Richards (Holland Taylor) in Season 3 of the Emmy-nominated Outstanding Drama Series.
“I saw parts of it,” Beharie says. “And of course I thought of them. I thought of the Cybil interview. There are so many parallels. They wrote that before I even showed up. This was probably written two years before that, right? Now these things are happening and repeating themselves right before our eyes. Someone said to me, ‘This is not based on a true story,’ and I said, ‘Well, I don’t know.’ I liked the way people leaned on logic. I felt like what Chris was doing in the interview felt real in some ways because I saw these journalists doing something similar, trying to maintain some decorum while asking people for clarifications. And I thought that was interesting. I thought, oh, I wasn’t wrong. But isn’t that crazy?”
