How FNAF Into the Pit adapts Security Breach’s open-world mechanics to a new genre

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit is the latest entry in the Five Nights at Freddy’s Franchise, released as part of this week’s 10th anniversary celebration. The title marks a number of firsts for the franchise, as it features 2D survival horror gameplay and a short story from the Fazbear’s Horror Novel canon for the screen. Although it is not an open-world title, Into the pit takes a modern approach to its survival horror elements. The title tasks defenseless players with navigating a series of environments, collecting items and avoiding the wandering horrors. To achieve this, Into the pit adopts the open-world mechanics of another groundbreaking FNAF Title, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security vulnerability, and adapts it to a new genre.

Developed by Mega Cat Studios, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit tells the story of 10-year-old boy Oswald, who discovers an abandoned ball pit at Jeff’s Pizza, a local restaurant. He jumps in and is shocked to discover that the pit can transport him back to 1985, when the restaurant was a thriving Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Things quickly go awry, as Oswald arrives on the day that Spring Bonnie killed six children in the past, after which he had to flee from the Yellow Rabbit. His nightmare is far from over, however, as Spring Bonnie reaches through the pit, catches his father, and replaces him in the present. Since only he sees Spring Bonnie chasing him every night, Oswald must use whatever he can find to escape his home and return to the past. Only then can he find his father and end the chain of events he set in motion.

Into the Pit adapts the best mechanics of Security Breach for 2D gameplay

Security breach at Five Nights at Freddy’s 2021 revolutionized the classic Five Nights at Freddy’s Formula for a modern survival horror experience. The title took an open-world approach to the core gameplay mechanics, with players exploring the Mega Pizzaplex while collecting key items, hiding, and luring the animatronic cast along the way to each destination. Although this groundbreaking effort presented a number of technical problems, the ideas of Security breach has taken the series in a new direction and paved the way for a superior DLC experience, RUIN, to integrate the mechanics with great effect in 2023. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit takes this core mechanic and adapts it for a pair of semi-open spaces, Oswald’s house and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Players experience five days and nights as Oswald as he searches for ways to free his father from Spring Bonnie’s clutches. Each night, players must first help Oswald escape from his house, which requires him to find a way and the items needed to open the house. Defenseless, Oswald must evade Spring Bonnie, lure him into other rooms, or hide, similar to Security breachGregory before moving on to the next area. Once he escapes, players will essentially be transported to a 2D version of Security breachas Oswald uses a map to evade Spring Bonnie and a host of retro animatronics at Freddy Fazbear’s. Oswald can move around the pizzeria at will, luring and hiding through its many rooms, with optional items and hidden arcade games offering tantalizing risks and alternate routes. After completing each night’s central task, Oswald must escape the pizzeria while being pursued by rampaging animatronics before returning to the present and starting over the next day.

“Into the Pit” changes important mechanisms to address security gaps

While Security breach is the next FNAF Franchise has become an open-world experience, Into the pit offers more freedom of exploration. The Mega Pizzaplex offers players linear routes to reach their objectives, with the main quests taking place in a variety of isolated areas. Into the pitThe map is also divided into isolated areas, but the house and pizzeria allow Oswald to reach objectives via any route he sees fit, as long as he has the required item for the final door. On later nights, vents can be opened to form new paths between rooms, aiding in exploration and helping to avoid the growing number of active animatronics. Into the pit also modifies animatronic encounters and offers players the opportunity to avoid a jumpscare by completing mini-games in first-person while hiding.
