Video: Child catches largemouth bass from the shore

When I watch outdoor videos on the Internet, I am always a bit skeptical: Is the action authentic or was it staged or re-enacted?

The following 50-second video recently appeared on my Facebook feed. It was posted by Michigan Outdoor Obsession and the caption accompanying the video read, “This little boy is a legend. He’s hooked for life.”

I think this video (I assume it’s from a private pond) plays out as it is portrayed, and if so, that’s great. As a father of two boys (now in college), some of my fondest fishing memories are of my sons catching decent sized fish of various species from ages 4 to 12.

This big bass is probably spawning and the boy has it hooked with a white jig. He mentions the brand of bait but I don’t understand what he’s saying.

(Side note: I think it’s a little odd that the father would specifically look for the bait on the ground, ask his son, “What did you catch it with?” and then hold the bait up to the camera. Maybe the father owns a share in the bait company or knows the owner? Maybe it’s just my imagination, but it seems a little contrived.)

The boy obviously has excellent fishing skills for his age. His hook is set perfectly, as is his technique in fighting the big bass. It is clear that this is not his first big bass and he knows exactly how to hold it.

Congratulations to the young angler!

PS: There are many comments online about whether the family released the bass. I have no evidence to support my opinion other than observing that this is not the father’s first rodeo and the same goes for the kid. I say there is no chance they kept/killed the bass.
