Google takes action against widespread hacking of hotel accounts in Indonesia

JakartaGoogle has acknowledged and responded to the recent discovery of fraudulent data on Google Business accounts affecting hotels across Indonesia.

According to the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), hundreds of hotels’ Google Business accounts were compromised on Sunday, with account numbers changed to personal accounts. PHRI plans to report the incident to the Cybercrime Directorate of the Indonesian National Police.

“Our policy is clear that user-submitted changes must be based on accurate information, and our team works around the clock to combat policy violations,” Google said in a statement.

The company acknowledged that technical issues caused incorrect information to be displayed on several profiles. Google is currently implementing fixes to prevent future incidents and is committed to restoring the correct data to the affected profiles.

PHRI Chairman Hariyadi BS Sukamdani revealed that the hacking incident affected hotels in areas such as West Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra, Riau Archipelago, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali and South Sulawesi.

“According to reports, 92 hotels in East Java were affected, 156 in Central Java, eight in Lampung and we are still collecting data from other regions,” Hariyadi said during an online press conference.

Hariyadi raised concerns about possible fraud. According to reports, 10 consumers in Central Java have already fallen victim to fraud. PHRI advises the public to contact hotels directly through official channels to avoid fraud.
