New federal health guidelines require doctors to inform patients about the potential pain that may occur during IUD insertion.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges doctors to counsel all patients about the potential pain “as well as the risks, benefits, and alternatives of various pain management options.”

“A person-centered plan for IUD placement and pain management should be developed based on the patient’s preferences,” the CDC recommendations state.
