2 people arrested in connection with rape on Coney Island

According to the New York Police Department, two men were arrested in connection with a rape that occurred Sunday evening in Coney Island.

David Davon Bonilla, 24, and Leovando Morena, 37, were arrested after police said they attacked a 46-year-old woman at 1904 Surf Avenue. The NYPD said the suspects pushed the woman to the ground, displayed a knife and forcibly raped her.

Davon Bonilla is facing a number of charges, including rape, assault, sexual abuse and illegal possession of weapons. Morena has been charged with assault and is listed as homeless.

Police added that a 34-year-old man intervened in the attack but was hit in the head by Morena.

Brooklyn residents told News 12 they would like to see an increased police presence in the area.

“I think there should be more police here,” said Tony Acevedo of Coney Island. “I think people would feel safer, and I’ve been here my whole life. I’m sorry and I feel terrible when I hear something like this happens.”

Other residents say they do not feel safe walking alone on the promenade.

“You always have to be in a group, never alone, always have women or family members with you,” said Charlene Fountaliotis of the Marine Park. “I tell my daughters never to go alone.”

As of Monday evening, it is still unclear to the police whether there is a connection between the suspects and the victim.
