Friends of the Porter Public Library browse through for the next 50 years

WESTLAKE, Ohio – The Friends of Porter Public Library have had an exciting few years, not least because of the library’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Lynn Pettyjohn, president of the Friends, noted that 2023 is a big year for the group. This year, $100,000 was donated for the outdoor pavilion, which includes a brick paver walkway purchased by many library lovers.

There is still room for more pavers if anyone wants to purchase some. The laser engraved brick pavers are 4″ x 8″.

They “make a great gift idea all year round and can be ordered on the library’s website, https://westlakelibrary.org/friends, with up to three personalized lines for $125 each,” Pettyjohn said.

Another big change was the move of the Book Nook to the old bookstore near the library entrance.

She said it was more visible there and that the Friends were able to add an extra day, so there are now four days in total that people can go to the Book Nook to buy a favorite book or two on a cheap basis.

The Book Nook offers used books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and books that have been removed from the library’s collection.

The Book Nook is open Mondays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pettyjohn also invites patrons to get involved on the Friends board and volunteer for other positions at the library.

For example, she noted, “At the last annual Book Flea Market, 75 volunteers worked more than 1,000 hours and raised $13,000 to fund various library programs, including the summer reading program, vans to deliver books to homebound people, National Library Week activities, and more.”

From October 17th to 20th there will be another book flea market – a good time to think about volunteering.

The Friends are also hosting a fall festival at the pavilion on October 5th from 1-4 p.m. There will be fall backdrops for photo opportunities, arts and crafts, and visits from fairy tale princesses.
