UPDATE 2: According to El Paso Electric, about 1,800 customers in West El Paso were still affected by a power outage as of 6:10 p.m. Monday.
The outage was caused by excavation work by construction workers.
Teams are currently working as quickly and safely as possible to replace the damaged cable and restore power to affected customers.

The utility company said it is investigating the cause of the outage and is working to restore power to affected communities.
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Nearly 7,000 customers in West El Paso are affected by a power outage, according to El Paso Electric’s outage map.
The map shows two power outages currently ongoing, leaving about 7,000 people without power near Artcraft.
The outage was reported shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday, August 12. The estimated restoration time is approximately 5 p.m.
Viewers also report that Tippin Elementary School is affected.
