Update on open apprenticeships before the school year

Update on open apprenticeships before the school year

(WRGB) – Although many children in the capital region still have a few weeks of summer fun ahead of them, we wanted to check whether there might be significant vacancies in some districts in the coming school year.

Monday was the first day of school in several states, including Virginia. In one school district there, our sister station 7News (WJLA) reported 82 unfilled teaching positions.

A look at their websites suggests that districts are doing better than they were a few years ago, when the pandemic caused teachers to leave the profession for other careers or retire.

However, there are still vacancies.

There are 64 teacher openings in the Albany School District, 10 more than when we checked last month.

There are 29 job openings in Schenectady, five more openings than last month.

Troy has 14, an increase of seven since July.

According to Shenendehowa’s website, there is only one teaching position open. Last month, there were eight.

CBS 6 will continue to monitor these numbers as the start of school quickly approaches.

“Crisis in the Classroom” is a weekly segment where CBS 6 examines issues facing educators, students and families. Send tips to our team via email or call (518) 288-6034.
