In a disturbing move, the city of Downey, California has banned the display of Pride flags on city property, bowing to pressure from an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group. This decision is simply wrong – the flag ban only serves to divide and stigmatize and creates a climate of exclusion and intolerance.
This ban, which undermines the values of diversity and inclusion, comes at a time when unity and public representation are more important than ever. The flag policy, which limits which flags can be displayed, has been pushed forward despite strong opposition from community leaders, including Mayor Mario Trujillo and Council Member Horacio Ortiz, both of whom are proud members of the LGBTQ+ community. Their voices, along with those of numerous residents and officials, have highlighted the implicit bias and harmful effects of the policy.
Please sign this petition to call on the Downey City Council to repeal this regressive policy and reaffirm its commitment to all residents!
