5 things you need to know

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Happy Thursday morning, Mid-Michigan! We hope you have a great week. If you’re traveling with us, here are five stories you should know today.

1. Consumers Energy and DTE Energy are still working to restore power after Tuesday’s severe storms. Areas without power include Mt. Pleasant, Midland, and south of Flint and Owosso. In the Thumb, Sebewaing and Sand Point are just a few areas without power. Both companies expect power to be restored to most customers later this evening.

2. Michigan is demanding that a judge close the investigation and dismiss attorney Ven Johnson’s lawsuit over the 2020 floods caused by dam failures. The state claims there is no point in pursuing the case since they have proven they were not responsible for the dam failure. Johnson said the state of Michigan acted on information from the former owner of the dams and the companies they hired when it approved a plan to raise the water level of Wixom Lake.

3. The Genesee County Health Department announced that a person from Flushing has been diagnosed with West Nile virus. The health department is unsure if the person contracted it locally or while traveling. Cases can be extreme, but 80 percent of cases are asymptomatic. The state said at least five people and 26 animals have been infected this year.

4. The Flint Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) is expanding its clean energy project with a share of a $22.2 million grant. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the Flint MTA will use the money to expand its fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses. The current bus fleet has reduced the Flint MTA’s diesel consumption by 99 percent.

5. The Flint City Council will hold a special meeting tonight. The meeting is to comply with the requirements of the City Charter, which requires the Council to meet at least twice a month. The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Flint City Hall.
