Salisbury Zoo creates a sensory-responsive space for autistic people

SALISBURY, Maryland – The Salisbury Zoo recently received KultureCity certification, officially becoming a sensory-friendly space for people with autism.

Jayme Del Vecchio of the Lower Shore Autism Community said this new move will create a more welcoming environment for families from diverse backgrounds.

“Our families have many sensory needs and are often afraid to go to these places because there is nothing there that meets their sensory needs,” Del Vecchio said.

To meet certification standards, the zoo is currently making some changes, according to zookeeper Brinkley Rayne.

“We put up signs around the zoo saying this area is quieter and this area is louder. We also have these sensory backpacks from KultreCity that contain noise-canceling headphones, as well as fidgets and other nonverbal communication cards to help visitors who are having a hard time,” Rayne said.

All of these provisions benefit people with autism and ensure that their stay at the zoo is pleasant and memorable.

“We’re kind of a community zoo. We’re here for everyone. We just want to make sure that everyone who visits has the best time possible and that we’re accommodating everyone’s different needs,” Rayne said.
