Artist interview
Q: What was the initial spark that inspired you to write “Won’t Stop Loving You,” and how did the lyrics evolve as you wrote them?
A: I wanted to write a song that everyone could understand, no matter who you are. When you’re deeply in love, it feels like you’re flying, so I wanted the mood in the chorus to be just that.
Q: How do you go about creating such powerful visual elements in your songwriting?
A: I try to write lyrics that grab people’s attention and are unique in some way. Also, I just love the fantasy genre, so that often finds its way into my music.
Q: Can you tell a personal story that reflects the emotions in your lyrics?
A: We’re no longer together, but when I was 17, I once walked 10 kilometers through the snow to get to my then-girlfriend’s house. It’s a true story!
Q: How do you balance the acoustic style with a slow dance feel to create a unique sound?
A: This song is written in 6/4 time, which is a very unusual time signature for a pop song, but it gives it the feel of a slow dance, like a 3/4 song, while still maintaining a fast tempo.
Q: Can you tell us about your typical songwriting process?
A: I start by thinking of melodies that I like, and only when I have all the melodies do I think about exactly what I want to express lyrically.
Q: What challenges did you face while creating “Won’t Stop Loving You”?
A: The song has a very wide vocal range, so it was super hard for me to sing it all the way through. It took me a lot of tries, but luckily I managed it eventually.
Q: What does the line “We’ll be the birds in a love tree” mean to you?
A: I just thought that line was cute. The song feels a bit like flying, so I thought the imagery of the birds in the tree mimicked that in some way.
Q: What is the perfect environment for someone to hear “Won’t Stop Loving You” for the first time?
A: With the love of her life, during her marriage proposal!
Q: How does it feel to see your early lyrics turn into fully produced songs?
A: It feels really good when people make a personal connection with my music. Honestly, that’s the only reason I make music.
Q: What was one of the most memorable reactions you’ve received from a fan?
A: Someone told me they used my song for their first dance. It brought me to tears. I was so grateful and honored to hear that.
Q: Are there any new styles or genres of music you would like to explore in your future projects?
A: I’ve realized I want to have a lot of sounds, I think that’s what makes me unique. I try to write in a lot of genres, so my next songs could be anything from piano ballads to hip hop, who knows?
Q: What are your goals for the future?
A: I just hope that people feel happier, better, or more emotional when they listen to my music. That’s all I could ask for and all I’m trying to achieve.
Q: How do the fantastical elements in your songs help you express real feelings and experiences?
A: I grew up reading a lot of fantasy books and I believe that fantasy has a special energy that lifts people up and expands the boundaries of their world. I try to translate that into my music, to give people the opportunity to escape into a new world for a few minutes at a time.
