OXG and Vodafone launch large-scale FTTH project to connect 300,000 households in Hamburg

OXG and Vodafone are launching a large-scale fiber optic project throughout Hamburg. Independently and without public funding, the partners will build fast fiber optic connections (FTTH) for up to 300,000 households in the northern German port city over the next few years. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, Stefan Rüter, Chief Commercial Officer of OXG Glasfaser GmbH, and Michael Jungwirth, member of the Vodafone Germany management team, gave the official starting signal for the fiber optic project yesterday on August 28th. The first excavators have now rolled out in Wandsbek to lay fiber optic cables underground for thousands of households.

At the same time, Vodafone has started marketing fiber optics and is using media consultants to inform local residents about the expansion. Interested property owners can now easily check whether their property is in the expansion area and can be connected to the fiber optic network free of charge. In addition to Vodafone, other telecommunications companies will also be able to offer services such as telephony, internet and TV via the infrastructure in the future. This increases the freedom of choice when it comes to providers and offers.

Michael Jungwirth, Member of the Management Board, Vodafone Germany

Fast and reliable networks increase the quality of life enormously. Today we are launching Hamburg’s largest fiber optic offensive and putting the city in the digital fast lane. We are laying fiber optics wherever the people of Hamburg need them: in housing developments for homeowners and in large apartment buildings for thousands of tenants.

Stefan Rüter, Chief Commercial Officer, OXG

We have set ourselves the goal of taking Germany a big step forward on the road to digitalization. With our fiber optic offensive, we want to future-proof up to 300,000 Hamburg households and provide them with ultra-fast internet in the shortest possible time. I am therefore very pleased that construction has already begun. And it will soon continue in the next districts. The special thing about the OXG expansion: the fiber optic connection is free for owners and residents and we are expanding without reaching a pre-marketing quota. The OXG fiber optic network is open and accessible to all telecommunications providers – no matter how small or large. Residents benefit from a free choice of provider with great freedom of choice.
