State Treasurer stops in the Hub City

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Mississippi Treasurer David McRae made a stop in the Hub City on Wednesday during his tour of the state.

McRae said he has been able to return $100 million worth of unclaimed money to Mississippi residents over the past four years.

Now McRae is traveling across the Magnolia State to celebrate the record-breaking sum.

On Wednesday afternoon, the tour stopped at Ed’s Burger Joint, where Treasury staff helped residents find money in circulation that they could claim.

“David is one of those people who wants to get the money out of the government and into the hands of the people,” said Lee Youngblood, chief of the Unclaimed Property Division in the Mississippi State Treasurer’s Office. “We think it’s imperative to get this money out of the state and into the hands of the people who need it.”

“I mean, it’s an economic boost for a lot of communities when you step in and give a lot of money back all at once or give the money to someone who’s going to use it.”

Interested parties can search for unclaimed funds on the treasury.ms.gov website.
