An Illinois teacher went viral after posting a TikTok video explaining why she doesn’t like her students bringing cupcakes to class as “birthday gifts.”

Ann Brackemyer, a kindergarten teacher with the TikTok name “kbcrayons,” said in the Aug. 2 video post that she loves celebrating birthdays in her classroom, but cupcakes aren’t such a great option.

“I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but please don’t bring cupcakes,” Brackemyer told parents in the TikTok video, which has been viewed over 2.4 million times. “They make a huge mess and the kids honestly don’t like eating them that much.”

Once the cupcake frosting is “all over the place,” “the kids don’t know what to do,” Brackemyer explains in the video.

“It’s just too much for them and too much of a mess,” she said of children eating cupcakes.

Ann Brackemyer suggests cupcake alternatives

Alternatives suggested by Brackemyer include glazed sugar cookies with sprinkles, mini doughnuts, ice cream sundaes with sprinkles and Little Debbie snacks.

“These are easy and no-fuss snacks that you can bring your child into the classroom that don’t make a mess and that the kids love too,” the teacher said of the other foods.

Brackemyer said Cosmic Brownies, which cost between $2 and $5 a box, are “a favorite in her room.”

Others disagree: “Send your child what he or she wants”

Other TikTok users, including some claiming to be either parents or teachers, commented on Brackemyer’s video. One user commented, “As a teacher, you send your child what they want.”

Another user said that her children’s school “no longer allows food as a birthday gift (and) now recommends that if you want to bring something, bring jewelry bags.”

One commenter said: “I’ll bring what my child chooses! It’s his birthday, he gets to choose.”

Another commenter said, “As a teacher, the kids don’t care, they’re going to eat something, and we don’t care, we’re going to clean them up. I keep wanting cupcakes because I want one.”
