The viral drink clip at the US Open has more to offer than meets the eye

A moment from the US Open will go viral on Wednesday because it packs so much drama and intrigue into a five-second clip. It’s the story of a man, two drinks and a woman – and no one really knows what’s going on.

The framework and pace of this appear to tell a story. At first glance, it looks like he’s getting a drink for the woman next to him, only to be caught by a guy behind them who hands him the drink first. If that’s what happened, it’s a devastating moment of being outdone, a heartbreaking story of unrequited love. That version of events, at least, seems to be what everyone is saying.

We believe there’s more to it, and damn if I’m not going to go through these five seconds like the Zapruder film to explain what I think happened in that moment.

I don’t believe for a second that the woman next to him is his wife or girlfriend. The body language and the way they exchange glances is completely wrong. In fact, I believe the woman taking the drink is either a girlfriend or a family member.

The person we Strictly speaking You have to pay attention to the woman on the far right of the picture who appears to be gesturing and talking to the man and with whom he makes eye contact as he returns to his seat. After 5 seconds it is clear that the man is paying little attention to the drink being handed to him next to him.

This is how it went in my eyes:

  1. Man gets drinks for himself and his better half after the first set
  2. While he was gone, a drinks vendor passed by and she ordered a drink
  3. Man returns with two drinks and is amazed at what happened

You see, THAT is why she gestures with her left hand as if to say, “I just got one,” while he looks at her questioningly. It has Nothing nothing to do with the woman next to him. Also note that at no point does the woman between them make eye contact with the older man, but instead immediately looks up to make eye contact with the man in the back row while saying “thank you.”

She expected this drink from above. At no point was there any expectation or agreement that the older man would buy her a drink. It could easily have been two couples who couldn’t get four seats next to each other, and their awkward spacing was designed to ensure close proximity in a T-shaped configuration.

T-shaped seating theory at the US Open

Man No. 1 Woman #2 Woman #1

As we see here, the general idea is that one couple is separated by a seat corresponding to the older couple, while the younger couple sits in the front and back. I believe that in this scenario, everyone knows each other by their body language, but I don’t believe for a second that the man bringing the drink will be rejected.

Justice for everyone involved. I think this moment is completely innocent and fine.
