The Patriots have chosen a starting quarterback (but aren’t telling us yet)

The New England Patriots have decided who their starting quarterback will be for the 2024 NFL season. They just don’t want to tell us yet.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said the team will update both players – Jacoby Brissett and Drake Mayo – on Thursday and will speak with the rest of the team later before informing the public.

“We’ve made a decision. We just haven’t communicated it yet,” Mayo said. “And honestly, I want the guys to hear it from me first before they hear it from anyone else.”

The Patriots’ first-year head coach added that the decision on who should start was ultimately his, but he noted that offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt was also involved in the process, as were – at least in a broader sense – the assistant coaches on that side of the ball.

The Patriots began training camp with Brissett as the starting quarterback. The experienced offseason addition remained the starting quarterback throughout training camp and in all three preseason games, but was “outplayed” by rookie challenger Maye, according to Mayo.

Overall, the third pick in this year’s draft has impressed. After a slow start, Maye seemed to have put in solid performances in practice and preseason.

In addition to these two players, New England also has sixth-round draft pick Joe Milton under contract. Former starting quarterback Bailey Zappe was released on Tuesday and has since joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad.
