A woman’s husband invites his mother on a two-week couples trip – without telling her

A woman says she was looking forward to a trip lasting several weeks with her husband and her dog – until he announced that he had also invited his mother.

In a post shared anonymously on Reddit, the woman describes herself and her husband as “digital nomads,” pointing out that they spend six months traveling abroad each year when they’re not home in the U.S. This year, they’re focusing on exploring Brazil, since their families live in the country.

“It’s just me, him and our little dog enjoying our wonderful time as a couple,” she writes. Or at least that’s how she thought it would be.

However, at a recent dinner, her husband dropped the news that he and his mother had decided that she should come along for a two-week portion of the trip.

“Two weeks, with my mother-in-law, in a tiny apartment,” the woman writes. “There is no turning back, the decision has been made, flights booked and everything.”

The woman adds that her husband had planned to spend two months with his mother and extended family at the end of the trip anyway, and that she, as his wife, was “completely left out of the decision.”

“I believe that as a married couple you should consult before making decisions like this,” she writes, adding, “I would probably try to negotiate it down to a week, but he hasn’t even given me a chance to share my point of view or say if I would be OK with it.”

The woman called this a “huge lack of respect” and said that she and her husband had since argued about his decision and that he was “extremely offended because I was not 100 percent happy and excited about his mother spending the two weeks with us.”

“He even went so far as to take off his wedding ring to say, ‘Either you accept my mother or we go our separate ways,'” she adds.

Several commenters on the post described the husband as “emotionally manipulative” and said he went too far with his threat of divorce.

“It sounds to me like he’s going to extremes to get her to give in. This is incredibly manipulative,” wrote one commenter.

Another gave the original writer some advice: “Change your flight home and leave as soon as possible. Take the puppy with you, leave the ring and a note so you can enjoy time with his mom.”
