Copper gutters worth thousands of dollars stolen from Waldo Preschool

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Stealing is bad enough, but thieves in Waldo are taking it to the next level.

In the last few days they have stolen copper gutters worth several thousand dollars.

The thefts occurred at the Rainbow School in Waldo.

Deena Smith, the school’s executive director, said the same routine has been repeated for the past seven days.

“At least six or seven times, people have come onto our property and stolen our gutter downspouts,” Smith said. “We don’t have enough money here to take care of these things on a regular basis.”

Smith said more than five gutters were stolen and replacing them would cost the school more than $3,000.

She has put up signs on all the remaining gutters asking thieves to stop stealing, but so far that hasn’t deterred them.

The police have become involved and are currently actively investigating the case. The perpetrators are said to have been driving a dark-colored Dodge Journey with a Missouri license plate.

Smith expressed hope that the madness would soon end, but feared that costs would continue to rise.

“They’ve given us enough headaches already and we need to continue with our programming and the good things we’re doing here,” Smith said. “We don’t need these kinds of problems.”

If you have any information about this case, you are asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

The school is also asking for donations to replace the stolen gutters.
