Director of Astro Bot leaves door open for PC version and closes PlayStation VR2

The director of PlayStation 5 exclusive Astro Bot has left the door open for a possible PC version, but ruled out any chance of a release for Sony’s PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset.

Nicolas Doucet was asked by MinnMax what he would like to say to PC gamers who want to play the modern PlayStation mascot’s games on their platform. “We want to hear from you,” he said. “Absolutely, we want to hear from you.”

Astro Bot is only confirmed for PS5 so far, but there are also a ton of other PlayStation exclusives now available on PC. Sony has aimed to expand its player base and revenue by bringing franchises like The Last of Us, God of War, Spider-Man, and more to the platform.

Doucet made it clear that while Astro Bot could expand beyond PS5, it won’t return to the robot’s roots on PSVR. This isn’t for any malicious reasons, of course, but simply because developing a “flat screen” game is very different from developing one for virtual reality.

“No chance,” Doucet said when asked if Astro Bot could come to PSVR2. “It’s designed for a different medium. It would be a different game.” While the explanation makes sense, this probably won’t be happy news for buyers of Sony’s headset who are already frustrated by the lack of major games.

“Astro Bot” will be released on September 6, 2024, is a direct sequel to “Astro’s Playroom” and is intended to combine all of its colorful platform elements and more into a full-fledged game.

In our Astro Bot preview, IGN said, “Building on the foundations of Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot seemed poised to take the Astro games into a league of their own, if they weren’t already.”
