Madison Keys (14) vs. Maya Joint (qualification)
Madison Keys scored a resounding first-round victory, defeating doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-1. Keys will look to attack Maya Joint with the serve and flat groundstrokes that helped her reach the final in New York in 2017. This will be the first time Keys and Joint have faced each other.
Alexander Shevchenko vs Frances Tiafoe (20)
Frances Tiafoe won a close four-set match against fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6:4, 6:3, 4:6, 7:5. It is his first meeting with Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko, who won his first-round match in four sets against Dominik Koepfer.
Tiafoe will likely rely on his strong serve (against Kovacevic he won 80 percent of his points on his first serve), but he will also be able to rely on the loud home crowd against Shevchenko.
Tatjana Maria against Coco Gauff (3)
Coco Gauff began her US Open title defense with a clear 6-2, 6-0 win over Varvara Gracheva. Although she won all her service games, Gauff faced many break points and made six double faults.
The American leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Maria in Auckland in 2023. She will look to build on her first-round serving performance with another solid performance.
Laslo Djere vs Novak Djokovic (2)
For the second year in a row, Novak Djokovic will be playing under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He routinely beat Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, but the world number two made some uncharacteristic unforced errors as he adjusted to the hard courts.
Djokovic has a 2-0 record against fellow countryman Laslo Djere, including coming from a two-set deficit at last year’s US Open.
