Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that he will write to his Tamil Nadu counterpart requesting that credentials of people seeking to enter the textile industry be checked.
This decision was taken after about 50 Bangladeshi intruders were identified and pushed back by the police in Assam due to political unrest in Bangladesh.
Sarma explained that these immigrants used Assam as a route to reach the southern cities and find work there.
He mentioned that Tripura Police and BSF are conducting similar operations. Security measures are being stepped up in Karimganj district, where infiltration attempts are taking place.

In a social media post, Sarma pointed out that three illegal immigrants were pushed back early Wednesday.
The intruders were identified as Md Zubair Sheikh, Juel Sheikh and Ruma Khatun. Sarma clarified that the people attempting to enter were Muslims, contradicting the assumption that Hindu Bengalis were migrating.
He stressed that these were not political refugees, but only economic refugees.
He expressed concern that only a small percentage of people attempting to enter the country illegally are detected.
Sarma also stated that the government will take strict action against all Bangladeshi citizens living in Assam with valid documents but involved in anti-India activities.
