Almost all LiveWire S2 have been recalled and could suddenly stop

The Quickshift

  • LiveWire is recalling a total of around 788 2024 S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland EV motorcycles worldwide
  • The problem is related to a high voltage fuse that can remain open under certain operating conditions.
  • In this case, the engine may fail without warning to the driver. All other electrical functions will continue to work (lights, ABS, indicators), but the engine will suddenly fail.
  • LiveWire instructs dealers to replace the defective fuse with a new one with a higher amperage, at no cost to customers.

LiveWire has sent a global recall notice to dealers around the world for certain 2024 S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland EV motorcycles. The problem? Apparently, the high-voltage fuse supplied by the factory on the affected units “can blow due to repeated rapid acceleration events,” which in turn “can result in a loss of propulsion without prior notice to the rider.”

In plain language: The bike’s motors could suddenly stop moving without warning. At the same time, the announcement also states that all other electrical functions (ABS, lights, indicators) will continue to work. Only the motor will not move you and it cannot be restarted either because the fuse is stuck open.

Please note that this is a different recall than the previous software-related recall for S2 Del Mar, which also involved bikes stopping suddenly during use. The current recall is for a physical hardware issue, not a software issue.

In the United States, LiveWire has filed the corresponding Part 573 Safety Recall Report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the supporting documentation for this recall in the United States includes the Worldwide Dealer Notice as well as the corresponding LiveWire Service Bulletin instructing dealers how to process the recall and handle service for affected units.

LiveWire’s service bulletin is dated August 17, 2024 and refers to this as Recall 1003 – 2024 S2 High Voltage Fuse. This recall affects all 2024 S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland motorcycles manufactured before July 15, 2024. Notably, all 2024 S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland motorcycles manufactured after this date use a different high voltage fuse and are not affected by this issue or the resulting recall that addresses it.

This recall could affect approximately 788 of the 2024 LiveWire S2 Del Mar and Mulholland models, including approximately 574 S2 Del Mars and 214 S2 Mulhollands. In its recall documents, LiveWire notes that it is unable to provide an estimate of the percentage of vehicles actually affected by this defect.

But from RideAparts Add it all up, and that’s practically every S2 motorcycle LiveWire has produced.

LiveWire plans to notify the dealer about this issue between August 14 and August 21, 2024. In addition, the company plans to notify the owner between August 19 and August 26, 2024.

In the event that some LiveWire S2 motorcycles have been sold since purchase from LiveWire, the company asks that previous owners pass this recall information on to the new owners so that they can initiate recall service if needed. Additionally, if the original owners of the affected LiveWires provide LiveWire with the new owners’ address information at [email protected], the company can notify the new owners so that they can initiate service.

For LiveWire dealers, the official notice states that they can sell bikes affected by this recall but cannot deliver them until the appropriate service has been performed. According to the company, recall kits containing a higher-amperage high-voltage fuse should be delivered to dealers starting August 19, 2024.

Owners of affected LiveWire S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland motorcycles should contact their local LiveWire dealer to schedule recall service. Your LiveWire dealer will then remove the defective fuse and replace it with a new, higher amperage, high voltage fuse.
