MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The brutal heat is finally over, but the humidity will be slower to drop. Temperatures will be significantly milder by the end of the work week, but the mugginess will linger through Friday.

We’re watching a strong cold front move in Thursday evening, bringing thunderstorms and showers through Friday morning. Behind this front, drier air will finally arrive and temperatures will get even cooler ahead of the long holiday weekend.

What’s next…

Depending on where you are, we’ll see a mix of clouds and sun today. Western regions will see a little more sun, so temperatures there will climb to the mid-80s this afternoon. For those stuck under the clouds, highs will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Dew points will still be in the mid- to upper-60s, so humidity will still be noticeable. Later in the day, an isolated shower can’t be ruled out.

Temperatures will drop to around 18 degrees overnight and the sky will be mostly cloudy.

There will be a little more sun on Thursday, but not much. It will remain somewhat cloudy and humidity will remain the same. Highs will be around 30 degrees. There may be a few showers in the evening with the approach of a cold front, but the main rain front will likely reach the region after sunset on Thursday evening.

A look into the future …

Scattered thunderstorms are likely Thursday night into Friday. We’ll be watching for the potential for strong storms, although the line is likely to weaken as it moves east.

On Friday, the skies will slowly clear up during the day and the humidity will begin to drop. The weekend looks pleasant and completely dry! There will be plenty of sunshine to celebrate summer once again. Labor Day looks a little chilly with highs around 25 degrees.
