Cyclists prepare for the 53rd DALMAC bike ride through Michigan this week

More than 1,000 cyclists are gathering in central Michigan this Wednesday, preparing for an annual bike ride through much of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

Cyclists from the Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw Bicycle Tour (DALMAC) are embarking on their 53rd trip north this week. The tour is named after a former state legislator who fought to give bicycles the same rights on the road as motor vehicles.

Dan Stockwell, the ride’s director, said DALMAC raises funds to support bike-friendly programs and infrastructure across the state.

“We’ve done a lot to encourage bike use in Michigan,” Stockwell said. “We’ve done a lot to improve safety, and the grants we’ve given have really helped a lot of communities encourage bicyclists. So I think our impact has been significant.”

The DALMAC begins at the MSU Pavilion and ends in Mackinaw City.

The ride begins on the campus of Michigan State University and takes several routes through the central and western parts of the state. Stockwell said cyclists participate in the ride for many reasons, from the challenge of cycling hundreds of miles to reuniting with friends to supporting bike safety.

He added that groups like to stop for ice cream and swim in the state’s lakes and rivers.

“We also make a wonderful stop at the East Boardman church where people have baked over 800 pies over the years. We stop there, eat pies and really enjoy it,” he said.

The riders end the trip with a photo with their bikes in front of the Mackinac Bridge. Safety on the route is the highest priority for the organizers.

“Of course, we require everyone to wear a helmet and we recommend carrying bright lights,” Stockwell said. “We also work with police officers along the route and make them aware that cyclists will come through.”
