Successful stop of the UTA Athletics Roadshow on Tuesday evening in Houston

HOUSTON- The inaugural UT Arlington Athletics Roadshow had a very successful second stop in Houston at the Grand Lux Café on Tuesday night. The evening culminated in a special presentation of a framed jersey for alumnus Raymond Matthews (’68 BS, Political Science), who pledged a transformational gift earlier this year, the largest unrestricted gift in UTA Athletics history.

Matthews, affectionately known as “Wings,” holds a special place in UTA Athletics history. When he arrived on campus in 1964, he established himself as a talented football student-athlete and was voted the team’s MVP in 1965 and 1966. Matthews’ exceptional skills on the field also led to his selection to the 1967 preseason All-American team. After graduating, he returned to his hometown of Houston, where he pursued a successful legal career, working as a successful corporate lawyer for more than three decades before retiring at the age of 59.

In addition to this presentation, Athletic Director Jon Fagg, Men’s Basketball Head Coach KT Turner, Women’s Basketball Head Coach Shereka Wright, Assistant Athletic Director for Development Ira Childress and other members of the UTA staff were on hand to speak with and meet a lively group of Maverick supporters from the Houston area.

After another successful night on tour, the show continues Wednesday night with stop number three in San Antonio at Café Ole from 6:30-8:00 p.m. CT.
