Judge stops Biden program that offers legal status to spouses of undocumented citizens

Laura Barron-Lopez:

Therefore, it is important to note that this is not an action based on facts, but rather a stay of litigation.

The lawsuit was filed by 16 Republican-led states, including Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas, who called it “Biden’s unconstitutional scheme would have rewarded more than a million illegal immigrants with the opportunity for citizenship after they broke our country’s laws, and encouraged countless more to do so.”

And these Republican-led states claimed that the government’s actions would hurt them financially because they would have to pay for services such as education, health care and driver’s licenses for these undocumented immigrants.

And those states were supported by America First Legal, a firm founded by Stephen Miller, a longtime Trump adviser and architect of many of his immigration policies, who was involved in this lawsuit.

Now the administration is seeking to defend that policy, known as the “Keeping Families Together” policy. And in a statement today, President Biden said, “Nothing I did changed the requirements people must meet to change their status under immigration law. I simply made it possible for these long-time residents to file the papers here with their families,” meaning they don’t have to leave the country for years to get that legal status.
