MONROE, NC (WBTV) – A drunk driver was arrested last week after “creating an unofficial ramp” during a chase in Union County. According to the sheriff’s office.

Chandler Kowalski, 24, of Waxhaw was taken to the Union County Detention Center, held on $42,500 bail and following accusation:

  • Serious crime: escape
  • kidnapping
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Hit and run
  • No operating license

Officers said when they tried to stop Kowalski, he fled at a high rate of speed, and a chase began.

Shortly after the chase began, authorities say Kowalski broke through a fence on a dead-end road off the Monroe Bypass and drove down an embankment. As he continued driving, he turned off his car’s headlights, “but remained highly visible as a large section of barbed wire fence was attached to the underbody of his car, creating a spectacle of sparks for officers to follow.”

According to reports, Kowalski eventually suffered an accident and was taken into custody.
