The original “Crow” director can’t stop cheering about the flop remake

At least one person laughs at The Crow Remake flop at the box office: Alex Proyas, who directed the original 1994 film.

Over the past week, the filmmaker has been taking to his Facebook page to share a steady stream of negative reviews and his brutally honest thoughts on the film’s box office performance so far – which grossed $4.6 million in its theatrical release over the weekend, against a reported $50 million production budget.

In a post on the subject, he wrote, “I thought the remake was a cynical cash grab. It seems like there’s not much money to be made.” Proyas also shared a post in which he described himself as “safe from seeing.” crow 2024 today.”

He has also shared numerous negative reviews of the film, adding his own thoughts in the captions. In one, he wrote: “I love how angry this guy is getting. Is that a ‘thumbs down’? Maybe they can lend their DCPs to film schools to teach classes on how NOT to make a film? Surely theaters won’t need them after next weekend.”

In his recent post on a review that named the film the “worst film of the year,” Proyas wrote: “The review we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a bit like flogging a dead horse now, so I think I’ll stop after this… until the next funny film comes along! 😉”

Proyas’ social media gloating comes after he had previously openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the remake since the trailer’s release in the spring. In a statement posted on social media in March, he cited the tragic death of original star Brandon Lee in an accident involving a prop gun on set as the reason for his disapproval.

“I really don’t enjoy hearing negativity about the work of fellow filmmakers,” Proyas wrote. “And I’m sure the cast and crew really had only good intentions, as we all do with any film. So it pains me to say more on this subject, but I think the reaction from fans speaks volumes. (‘The Crow’) is not just a film. Brandon Lee died in the making of it, and it was completed as a testament to his lost genius and tragic loss. It is his legacy. And it should remain that way.”

Rupert Sanders, who directed the remake, said previously Vanity Fair that Lee was on the minds of the team behind the new comic book adaptation, which stars Bill Skarsgård in the title role and FKA Twigs as his fiancée.

“It was obviously a terrible tragedy, and that’s definitely something that was always in the back of our minds while we were making the film,” Sanders said. “Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow. I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’re bringing history back to life. His soul is very much alive in this film.”
