NEWTON, Miss. (WTOK) – National Night Out is an annual event hosted by cities across the country aimed at building partnerships between the community and police to make neighborhoods safer.
The City of Newton hosted the event on Tuesday evening to introduce citizens to local police and emergency services.
Deputy Secretary Demarius Evans organized this event, which included local food vendors, a lemonade stand, a handful of local and regional law enforcement agencies, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and first responders.
It is important for the citizens of Newton to put faces to the names of the police officers and first responders who protect them every day, especially given the close relationships within the city.
“We’re a small community, you know; we don’t get out that often that everybody knows everybody, so it’s good to always put a face with a name; it’s also a chance for our community to make its mark. They hear about our law enforcement and our public safety officers, but now they can actually put a face with the name and actually build a relationship with them. It means a lot to me because I grew up here, I’ve lived here my whole life, so it’s important that everyone works together. The community works together, and the government and everyone works together so you have a family, and that’s all we want here, just a united family,” says Deputy Town Clerk Demarius Evans.
The children learned about the Newton County Sheriff’s Department SRT team, interacted with members of the Oshners during a helicopter ride, and had a lot of fun.
