The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska Water Treatment System is working on building a new treatment plant

WALTHILL, Nebraska (KTIV) – Work continues on a multi-million dollar expansion of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska’s water treatment system.

In honor of World Water Week, the Indian Health Service hosted an event to showcase progress on its new water treatment plant in Walthill, Nebraska.

After five years of planning and preparation, tribal officials began construction on the project last spring.

The project includes a new water treatment plant and a 300,000 gallon clear water well funded by the Health Finance and Environmental Protection Agency of India.

“This is an approximately $8.5 million project. $6.4 million is coming from the Indian Health Service and another $2 million is coming from EPA Region 7,” said Jerry Henscheid, Omaha Tribal director of services.

Once completed, the project will improve the tribe’s ability to operate and maintain its drinking water system and filter more substances from the water provided to the tribe.

The most important factor in the new treatment plant is a filter. So we are having two new filters installed. This will remove radium 228, iron and manganese. The filter system is the main reason for the new plant.

Officials hope to complete the project by December 2025.
