Government shutdown, State Fair, abortion, stuck in space

Government shutdown, State Fair, abortion, stuck in space

I don’t agree with the point of view of the couple who run the summer camp to teach teens to talk compassionately about abortion, but I applaud their efforts to tone down some of the inflammatory rhetoric (especially the yelling and screaming through megaphones) that I’ve experienced in other settings. But if they really want to make abortion “unthinkable,” they need to work harder to make sure we have support systems that make it “thinkable” to have children—such as free or low-cost child care for all, permanent child tax credits that actually reduce the cost of raising children, guaranteed minimum wages or some kind of guaranteed basic income, affordable housing, health insurance… the list goes on. And, oh, how about accurate sex education and access to free or low-cost contraception so that the thinking can only begin when people are actually ready to start a family and want to do so?

If your flight is canceled or delayed this Labor Day weekend, stop for a moment and think about astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, whose return from space is six months late after already being delayed two months (“2 Astronauts Stuck in Space,” August 25).
