The opening track of ashthe new project of today4casthas a ponderous quality to it. The song, titled “One More Time,” seems to plod through instrumental hip-hop, simulating a dogged march. “For only 7 songs, this was a difficult record to make,” the Boston producer reflects on Instagram. And when you remember that the EP was originally supposed to be released earlier this summer, the ponderous pace suddenly feels like a wordless metaphor for the creative process.
Yet todays4cast’s new offering is calm, if a little stubborn in its beat-based dynamics. “Intersection” wanders into late-night lo-fi territory, “Acceptance” swirls through understated drum and guitar instrumentals, and “It Was All A Dream” ends the project with a satisfying slide into drowsiness.
“Growth is unfortunately not linear,” todays4cast explains the title of the EP in the Instagram post mentioned above. “Things can burn in the process. Sometimes at the expense of something that perhaps should have been watered instead. Collect the ASHES and mix them into the fertilizer. Use water instead of fire and watch the garden you watched die become a thriving ecosystem where everyone can thrive.”
