Injured hiker rescued after jumping from St. Mary’s River

A paramedic flight crew and Virginia State Police rescued a hiker who reportedly jumped off a cliff into the St. Mary’s River in Augusta County Saturday afternoon.

Virginia State Police said the 20-year-old woman suffered severe back injuries following the incident on the St. Mary’s Falls Trail.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 5:23 p.m.

State police said a Med Flight 1 crew — including a state police patrol trooper and four paramedics from the Chesterfield County Fire and Emergency Services — directed a helicopter over the crash scene. One paramedic was lowered from the helicopter to the ground.

With the help of the Augusta County Fire Department, the rescuer secured the hiker and then lifted him 175 feet (53 meters) back to the helicopter.

The injured hiker was then placed in the helicopter, where the crew transitioned from rescue operation to ambulance transport to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
