The East Coast chain Wawa wants to build in Lafayette. Here it will be

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — East Coast chain Wawa plans to bring its gas stations, convenience stores and delivery-on-order grocery stores to Lafayette, according to a permit filed with the city of Lafayette.

Wawa announced in September its plans to open 60 stores across Indiana, with the first stores set to open in Noblesville and Westfield. Construction on the Noblesville store began in June.

Here’s what we know about Wawa’s plans for Lafayette.

Where will Lafayette’s Wawa be?

Permit applications filed with the City of Lafayette show that Wawa plans to build a store at 3790 South Street, just to the right of the building where a new Raising Cane’s restaurant is currently under construction.

Jeromy Grenard, Lafayette’s city engineer, said that while Wawa’s site plan has been reviewed and approved by the city, the company has not yet applied for a building permit. A timeline for the South Street store is currently unknown, Grenard said.

The Journal & Courier reached out to Wawa representatives for comment on the new Lafayette location but did not receive a response.

Are there plans for more Wawa locations in Lafayette?

Although only plans for the South Street location have been submitted so far, Grenard said Wawa developers are evaluating several locations in Lafayette where additional Wawa stores could be built.

What is Wawa?

Wawa originally opened as Wawa Dairy in Pennsylvania in 1902 and began expanding along the East Coast into a broader grocery and convenience business in the 1960s.

In the early 1990s, Wawa formalized its approach through an employee stock ownership plan that gave its employees partial ownership of the company.

Known for its breakfast sandwiches, hoagies and coffee, as well as a wide variety of snacks and beverages, Wawa currently has more than 1,000 stores in eight states and Washington DC
