Construction work on the Avengers ride in California Adventure leads to the closure of the legendary tram

Key findings

  • The expansion of Disney’s Avengers Campus will result in the demolition of the popular Red Car Trolley Shed, disappointing many guests.
  • The construction of two new Marvel-themed rides is announced for 2025. They are part of the expansion of the Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.
  • Guests express sadness at the loss of the trolley attraction and hope for its return after construction on Avengers Campus is completed.

DisneyDisney’s recent announcement to expand Avengers Campus in Disney’s California Adventure comes at the expense of the famous Red Car Trolley barn, and guests are not happy to see the attraction go. Following the success of Avengers Campus, Disney announced the addition of two new rides for the Marvel franchise, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. Construction on both will begin in 2025, and while not much is known about the rides themselves yet, it is obvious that the construction of the rides will entail the demolition of some other parts of the park. The expansion was announced at D23, but Disney only recently mentioned the demolition of the trolley barn.

The Red Car Trolley barn has been part of Disney’s California Adventure since July 2012 as part of Buena Vista Street. It leads from the front of the park to various rides, similar to the vehicles on Main Street at Disney World. The trolley was part of a renovation that transformed Sunshine Plaza into Buena Vista Street, a reminder of what California looked like when Walt Disney moved there. Unfortunately, some guests were unhappy with the California theme when it was originally added to the park. In comparison, expansions like Avengers Campus and superhero franchises like X-Men have been very successful with fans in recent years.

Journalist Scott Gustin said on Twitter that the trolley barn will be removed to expand Avengers Campus. Avengers Campus has been a popular part of the theme park and has included specials in the past such as Rogers: The Musical. Due to the new rides, the backstage area used for the trolley barn will be needed for the Avengers Campus expansion. When asked if the Red Car trolley barn would return at a later date, Disneyland officials said more information would be announced in the future. So there is a possibility that the trolley attraction could return after Avengers Campus is built. For now, it will close sometime in 2025.

Guests react to the demolition of the Red Car Trolley Barn

The announcement upset a number of guests who had enjoyed the tram, and many of them are now wondering if it will return. While guests didn’t like the original opening, the tram has become a key part of the park entrance, and many are sad to hear it is going away, even if it is for an expansion of Avengers Campus. Since the backlash after Gustin announced the news, there have been no further announcements.

Disney parks are constantly changing. Disney has updated many other attractions recently, such as the Peter Pan ride at Disney World. However, the trolley seemed to have a much larger following of loyal guests who enjoyed the sight on Buena Vista Street than Disney thought. Hopefully Disney will compromise and the attraction could return in some capacity once Avengers Campus is complete. Guests will have to wait for further announcements on how the implementation of these projects will affect the parks.
