Open Model Initiative now hosted by the Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation makes it easier for developers to find open source AI models by Open Model Initiative (OMI).

The OMI was first launched at the beginning of the summer by Call, CivitAIAnd Comfortable Org to help developers find models that are not subject to restrictive licenses.

“We have been convinced from the beginning that open licenses are the right way to build these AI models. Open licenses enable creators and companies to build on each other’s work, facilitate research, and develop new products and services without restrictive licensing restrictions,” the OMI wrote in its initial announcement.

The Linux Foundation believes that by integrating OMI, it is “taking a significant step toward making AI accessible and usable for all, creating an environment where creativity and advancement in AI can flourish without barriers,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.

Current goals of the OMI include establishing a governance framework and working groups, gathering feedback on future model research, creating common standards to improve model interoperability, developing a transparent dataset for training, and completing, testing, and releasing an alpha test model by the end of the year.

“We believe open source is the best way to ensure AI benefits everyone,” said Kent Keirsey, CEO and founder of Invoke. “Through OMI’s commitment to open source development under the Linux Foundation, we believe the collective will deliver high-quality, competitive models with open licenses that drive AI creativity, are free to use, and meet the needs of the community.”
