Passengers are warned not to carry this item in their checked baggage or they risk being denied boarding

A British traveller has recounted her ordeal when she was denied boarding a flight in Peru for carrying a portable charger in her checked luggage. Cody Stanley, one half of travel blogging duo @fortheplot, took to social media to post a cautionary tale about her experience.

Cody was traveling through Central and South America with her best friend Ellie Blake. The duo was traveling from Lima, Peru to Quito, Ecuador when the incident occurred. In a TikTok video, Cody stressed the importance of being careful about what you pack in your checked luggage.

She accidentally packed a portable charger in her luggage and the mishap resulted in her being denied a flight to Ecuador. She was left stranded while Ellie continued with her travel plans, reports the Manchester Evening News. It captioned the video: “DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Portable chargers are not allowed in checked luggage on the plane. READ IT AGAIN.”

In the clip, she said: “If you’ve seen me on your For You Page before, you probably knew that I was dating a blonde girl named Ellie, who is my best friend. But Ellie and I are not together right now because I wasn’t allowed to get on the flight to Quito with her, so she had to go without me and I’ve been stuck in Lima, Peru for two days.”

Cody described the mistake she made in detail: “I had a portable charger in my checked baggage and I didn’t know it was in there. Normally it’s not in there, it’s in my little bag. But it’s my fault, I take responsibility, but I forgot it.”

“They wouldn’t let me get it out of my bag and they wouldn’t let me get on the plane. So make sure you NEVER pack a portable charger in your checked luggage.” Find out about the latest events in Wales by signing up to our What’s On newsletter here.

According to UK Civil Aviation Authority guidelines, no item of baggage containing a lithium battery with a lithium content exceeding 0.3g or a watt-hour rating of 2.7Wh (for lithium-ion batteries) may be carried in checked baggage.

These items must be carried as hand baggage, unless the battery is removed from the baggage, protected against short circuits and carried in the cabin, according to the CAA. Passengers are also advised to check with their airline for any items prohibited in checked baggage.
