What you should know about the risk of severe storms and dangerous heat in the Detroit metropolitan area today

4WARNING WEATHER – Two weather hazards threaten the Detroit metropolitan area on Tuesday: severe storms could be accompanied by dangerous heat.

Heat on Tuesday

Due to heat indices around 38 degrees Celsius, a heat warning goes into effect today for most of southeast Michigan.

Actual temperatures are expected to rise to 35 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Chance of thunderstorms

A line of thunderstorms will move across southeast Michigan Tuesday morning. Thunderstorms will bring the possibility of lightning, heavy rain and hail.

The intensity and extent of the line of squall lines may decrease throughout the morning as it moves from the western side of the state to the east-southeast, so not everyone near Detroit will be able to see it.

There is a low risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather in the afternoon and evening. The probability of thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening remains low, as there are several factors that contribute to the formation of thunderstorms.

The total period normally extends from 2 p.m. to midnight, but the model data allow a better understanding of the development after sunset.

The storms observed can be strong to severe, with destructive gusts of wind and hailstones up to 2.5 cm in size or more being the main danger.

An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

This week

Sunset is at 8:15pm on Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to remain just above 35 degrees until Wednesday.

There will still be a chance of rain showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday before a high pressure system builds up in the region towards the end of the work week.
