Passengers stuck in mid-air on Sea World ride

More than a dozen passengers were suspended in the air for over an hour on Sea World’s Vortex ride on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

At around 2:45 p.m., the ride with 13 passengers on board got stuck at a height of about 30 m.

Passengers communicated with staff while a plan was developed to safely remove them from the attraction, using a cherry picker.

They were given water bottles and then umbrellas while staff tried to protect them from the heat.

Paramedics remained on standby while Queensland Fire Service rescued the passengers.

A scaffold was erected and each passenger was unbuckled from their seatbelt so they could exit the attraction.

All passengers were examined after their rescue and all 13 refused transport to hospital.

The Vortex ride is a high-speed spiral ride located in the New Atlantis Precinct.

The $50 million district opened in late 2022 and has three new attractions built over four years.

At that time, there were several closures of all three rides.

The Vortex ride will be closed for the next few days while Sea World investigates the cause of the malfunction.

Village Roadshow Theme Parks has been contacted by 7NEWS.com.au for comment.
