Extreme heat could impact gardens in northeast Kansas

OSAGE CITY (KSNT) – This week’s intense heat could take a toll on your garden.

We spoke with one of the owners of Osage Garden and Produce, Becky Siljenberg, who said she is trying to keep up with the brutal heat wave currently sweeping the Midwest.

In extreme heat, remember that water is essential for healthy-looking flowers.

“So the heat is obviously a big factor in our business,” Siljenberg said. “The heat and breeze we face in the south dry out our plants much faster than they otherwise would. So we have to check our plants in the morning, noon and afternoon, which often means we have to water them two to three times a day.”

Siljenberg also told 27 News that chrysanthemums are suffering in the current heat. Although chrysanthemums are popular for their colors and pretty appearance, caring for them is challenging as temperatures rise.

“Last week it was beautiful and the perfect weather for chrysanthemums,” says Siljenberg. “Now it’s a bit too warm, but we try to water them but not overwater them, and we try to protect the flowers from sunlight because then the color fades faster.”

It’s all about maintaining moisture. She said she and her husband water the flowers several times a day.
