New school bus stop in Blue River is safer than the current location on Colorado Highway 9

New school bus stop in Blue River is safer than the current location on Colorado Highway 9

A school bus stop that was previously located near Colorado Highway 9 in Blue River has been relocated to a safer location, according to the city’s police department.

Blue River Police Chief David Close said in an email that the bus stop was previously located at the intersection of Colorado Highway 9 and Blue River Road, “which is a very dangerous location due to the heavy traffic and high speed limits in that area.”

Close said there have been numerous car accidents in the area, causing concern among some parents.

“It was probably only a matter of time before we experienced a disaster,” Close wrote in the email. “It became my mission to find a safer school bus stop.”

So Close said he began looking for an alternative location for the school bus stop. He said he eventually worked with a private landowner and the city government to move the stop to a neighborhood about a quarter mile east of the highway. Since it’s on Blue River Road, it’s also conveniently closer to surrounding neighborhoods.

The speed limit there is 15 miles per hour, compared to 50 miles per hour on Colorado Highway 9, Close said.

“This new bus stop will be used as the primary bus stop in Blue River during the school year,” he said. “I am very grateful and proud of our community for working together to make this possible.”
