Tolkkinen concludes her commentary by saying, “Opponents of the new flag might ask themselves this question: Is it more important to hold on to the past than to look to the future?” As I passed the Minnesota Republican Party booth at the Minnesota State Fair, I noticed that they were proudly displaying the old Minnesota flag. As an old white man whose Minnesota history is not represented in the old flag, I have to ask the same question of the Minnesota Republican Party. At the fair, I saw many booths and displays featuring the new Minnesota flag, including the Minnesota DFL Party booth.

I started reading the newspaper at breakfast in junior high school and have been doing so ever since—for more years than I care to admit. A list of “my” morning papers could easily serve as a mini-biography: St. Paul Pioneer Press, The Times (London), International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, The Bakersfield Californian, and finally, when we moved back to Minnesota in 2016, the Star Tribune (some of my friends from St. Paul still haven’t forgiven me for that particular choice!). Of all of these, the Star Tribune was my absolute favorite newspaper in terms of balance, depth, and breadth of coverage. And now comes the Minnesota Star Tribune, which has significantly improved in all three of those metrics in its first week. Congratulations to all involved. Thank you and keep up the good work!
