Trump recruits Hung Cao for campaign stop in Virginia: “The Vietnamese community loves me!”

Former President Donald Trump recruited Virginia Senate candidate Hung Cao for a campaign stop at a Vietnamese restaurant.

During a day of events, including a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and a National Guard event, Trump found time to stop by the Vietnamese restaurant Truong Tien in Falls Church to deliver a speech. During his appearance, he sang praises of Cao and the Vietnamese community.

“You know, somehow, I don’t know what it is, you’ll be happy to explain, but the Vietnamese community loves me and I love them!” Trump said, a remark that was met with cheers and applause from restaurant patrons.

Trump then praised the clothing of the Vietnamese community, saying they were “the most beautifully dressed I have ever seen.”

He also had high praise for Cao, who is running against Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) in November.

“He’s a great gentleman. I love his name, Hung Cao. I love that name, and that name alone should get you elected,” Trump said. “And more importantly, he’s great. He’s great. He ran a great primary campaign. I supported him very early on, and he did very well. And we believe he has a very good chance of winning the Senate. And I really believe that. I hope your community goes out and really supports him 100%, because you can win, you can win, definitely win.”

Cao gave several speeches in Vietnamese and then announced that if elected, he would be the first Vietnamese-American senator in time for the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.

“Make America Great Again!” shouted a restaurant visitor in a loud Vietnamese voice, which made Trump smile and laugh.

Elsewhere, Trump drew a contrast between President Joe Biden’s alleged laziness and the hardworking nature of the Vietnamese community.

“We’re closer to World War III than we’ve ever been. And we’ve got a guy who just came back from vacation in California today,” he said. “Where is he going? To Delaware — another vacation, he’s staying another week. These aren’t the Vietnamese — these are hard-working people.”

Afterwards, the former president signed autographs and spoke to the guests.

Cao came to the United States as a refugee after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and served in the military. He won the Republican primary after an early endorsement from Trump.

In the race for the Senate seat in Virginia, Kaine is ahead by a large margin.
