Quentin Tarantino is currently writing a play — World of Reel

Since Quentin Tarantino canceled his tenth and final film, The Movie Critic, there has been no news of a possible new film being planned. There might be a reason for that…

Tarantino tells Bill Maher’s Club Random Podcast that his current work involves writing a possible play for Broadway:

I tend to write more for the theatre at the moment (…) In a comedy, the audience is a character in the room. And it’s like you say, the audience laughs, the actors kind of wait for a moment until the laughter dies down, then they have to pick up the tempo and a rhythm emerges, it’s almost as if the audience is a living animal in the room.

Maher then tells Tarantino to just concentrate on his last film, and Tarantino amusingly says, “If the play becomes popular, I’ll probably make a movie out of it.”

At the beginning of the year, Tarantino was preparing to shoot “The Movie Critic” with Brad Pitt, which means Deadline revealed that he had abandoned the project entirely in favor of another film. It is said that Tarantino rewrote the script for “Movie Critic,” made a new draft, and then simply changed his mind.

Given Tarantino’s past, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he returned to The Movie Critic. He did essentially the same thing with The Hateful Eight: He initially scrapped the film when the script leaked online, and then finally directed it himself many months later.

In the podcast interview, Tarantino doesn’t mention the Movie Critic drama, nor is he asked about it, but we’ll keep an eye out for Part 2 of the Maher conversation, which should appear online sometime this week.
