A late summer heat wave will sweep across the Midwest, while storms will slash the Hawaiian Islands this week.
Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis will have heat advisories at least once this week, as heat warnings are in effect for much of the region.
“Projected highs of 35 to 38 degrees Celsius, combined with high humidity, will drive heat indices to 40 to 46 degrees Celsius, bringing widespread heat warnings and advisories,” the National Weather Service said in its short-range forecast.
Hawaii will face a second named storm when Hurricane Gilma takes aim at the state after Hurricane Hone graze it, bringing torrential rains and howling winds.
According to AccuWeather, since 1992, no two named storms have come within 300 miles of the main Hawaiian islands within a week.
Here’s what you need to know about the weather for the week of August 26.
Hurricane Hone: Hurricane floods Hawaii with torrential rain; another storm on the way
Hawaii threatened by second hurricane
On Sunday, Hurricane Hone struck Hawaii, bringing up to 460 millimeters of rain to the islands by Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Parts of Maui experienced wind speeds of up to 60 mph (96 km/h) as the storm was located 175 miles (280 km) southeast of Honolulu.
A second named storm is targeting the islands as Hurricane Gilma moves westward. The storm was located just under 1,400 miles east of the large island on Sunday afternoon, packing sustained winds of up to 115 mph.
The hurricane center said Gilma is expected to weaken throughout the week and remain at hurricane strength through early Tuesday, but will lose strength as it approaches Hawaii late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Summer returns to the West, heat rages in the Midwest
The Midwest is being hit by a heat wave that is blanketing the region with heat advisories and extreme heat warnings.
“People who do not have effective air conditioning or who must spend a lot of time or exertion outdoors are at increased risk of heat-related illness,” the NWS said.
The Midwest will not suffer alone, as the taste of fall in the West ends this week and summer returns with full force.
“In some places, afternoon temperatures could rise as high as 35 degrees in just a few days,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Grady Gilman.
Temperature fluctuations and dry conditions also increase the risk of fire in the fire-affected parts of the country.
“Fire danger will remain high through the end of the weekend as the storm responsible for the cooler weather moves across the interior of the west,” AccuWeather said.
