Anti-war organization criticizes proposal to build ammunition facility in Grayling

(WPBN/WGTU) — An antiwar organization is encouraging Michigan residents to oppose the possible construction of a munitions facility in Grayling.

Saab AB, a Swedish aerospace and defense company, Announced earlier this year The company intends to build a new ammunition facility in the United States. Grayling is one of the proposed locations.

“Saab munitions have been used with devastating effects in numerous global conflicts, including the Gulf War, the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine,” said Code Pink: Women for Peace in a statement.

“These munitions have raised significant humanitarian and environmental concerns due to their potential to cause civilian casualties and environmental pollution. For example, the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) and the AT4 system have been criticized for their lack of precision and disproportionate impact on civilians, infrastructure and the environment,” the opinion continues.

In its statement, the group calls on Michigan residents to write to Governor Gretchen Whitmer to express their opposition to the planned facility.

Governor Whitmer has previously expressed their support for Saab to build its plant in Grayling.

“We’re doing it better than anyone else. Our manufacturing sector is really growing. And we know that all of our skills in automotive and other manufacturing are absolutely transferable to a growing defense industry,” Governor Whitmer said at Camp Grayling in June.

Saab is expected The decision on the location will be announced in September.

Code Pink is a nonprofit anti-war organization founded in November 2002 in the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
