“Slow Roll” in Milwaukee celebrates cycling and honors Chris Kegel

“Slow Roll” in Milwaukee celebrates cycling and honors Chris Kegel

The intense heat did not stop about 1,000 cyclists from cycling along Milwaukee’s lakefront today, albeit at a slightly slower pace.

“Today is a perfect day for a bike ride because it’s beautiful and sunny,” said Amelia Kegel, owner of Wheel & Sprocket.

With their bright T-shirts, the cyclists illuminated the lakeshore during Chris’ “Slow Roll” bike ride.

Many people came to participate in the Slow Roll

“The Chris Kegel Slow Roll is a free, family-friendly ride for 1,000 people,” Amelia added. “It’s 10 miles long on beautiful Lake Michigan.”

Amelia says the annual ride honors the life and legacy of her father, Chris Kegel. The late Wheel & Sprocket owner loved bikes and Wisconsin.

“We believe that bicycles simply make the world a better place,” said Amelia.

The slow ride began in 2016. The ride is also an opportunity to raise awareness for the Chris Kegel Foundation, which promotes safe cycling through projects and events.

“What he and his kids have done for cycling in southeast Wisconsin is remarkable,” said Tim Harden, who is taking part for the ninth time. “When you look around, you see how many different age groups are participating. From old people like me to young children.”

There were also people who took part for the first time.

“It’s fun. I also like meeting other cyclists,” said Fahmi Mohammad, who also didn’t mind the heat and the distance. “It’s child’s play.”

At Slow Roll, people quickly became friends and a connection and community developed. That’s exactly what Chris Kegel would have wanted.
