In the wake of recent developments in the Malayalam cinema industry following the release of the Hema Committee report, Malayalam actress Ramya Nambessan recently shared a strong message on equality and dignity on Instagram. In her post, Ramya said, “This world belongs to everyone born here equally. The opportunity to live here with dignity is not a handout, but a right that each and every one of us possesses. I learnt this from my dear friend who has shown this through his own life.”

She also referred to a quote by Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci which said, “To speak the truth is revolutionary.” Notably, Ramya is among the artistes who have faced the most cyberbullying for speaking out on women’s issues in the Malayalam film industry.

Today, Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman Ranjith and AMMA general secretary Siddique resigned following serious allegations. Ranjith resigned after being criticised over allegations made by a Bengali actress, while Siddique resigned in response to allegations of sexual harassment by a young Malayalam actress. These resignations come after the Kerala government released a redacted version of the Hema Committee report that exposed problems faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.
